NDC Protests Voter Register Issues Ahead of 2024 Elections

1

On September 17, 2024, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) organized a substantial protest against the Electoral Commission (EC). They raised serious concerns regarding alleged discrepancies in the 2024 voter register. This demonstration attracted a large crowd of supporters, all united in their call for a forensic audit of the voter register in advance of the upcoming December elections.

Furthermore, the NDC’s protest was ignited by claims of various anomalies found in the provisional voter register. These included illegal mass transfers of votes reported in several polling stations. Moreover, party officials asserted that such irregularities pose a significant threat to the integrity of the electoral process. This may potentially give an unfair advantage to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

During the demonstration, National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah addressed the gathering. He emphasised the critical need to safeguard the democratic process. He stated, “We cannot allow the electoral process to be compromised. We demand a forensic audit to ensure fairness in the upcoming elections.” His remarks resonated with the crowd, underscoring the party’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

In addition, the Ghana Police Service also played a crucial role during the protest, providing assurances of their readiness to maintain law and order throughout the event.  However, in response to the NDC’s allegations, the EC firmly maintained that all necessary corrections had been made to the voter register.

The protest signals rising tensions surrounding electoral integrity in Ghana as the nation approaches its general elections. The NDC’s actions demonstrate a determined effort to hold the EC accountable. This is to ensure a transparent electoral process, as both parties navigate the complex landscape of Ghanaian politics. As the electoral date approaches, the demand for clarity and trust in the electoral process remains a critical issue for all stakeholders involved.
