The government has requested that everyone involved in the Bawku chieftaincy conflict lay down their weapons and stop shooting at each other.
At a recent news conference in Accra on October 28, 2024, the Minister of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, addressed the escalating security issues in Bawku. His comments came in response to a tragic incident that has understandably raised fears within the community.
Moreover, the Minister emphasized the urgent need for law and order. He announced that security agencies must enforce the curfew strictly. In addition, he urged residents to comply with this directive. Cooperation with security personnel is essential for restoring peace in the region.
He specifically stated, “Residents are, therefore, urged to comply with the directive, and to cooperate fully with the security agencies to restore peace and normalcy in the area.”
Recent Violence in Bawku
Furthermore, the Minister’s statements followed a deadly gunfire attack that occurred on October 27, 2024. In this tragic incident, unidentified gunmen opened fire on travellers along the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway near Gbimsi, close to Walewale.
As a result of this attack, significant casualties were reported. In total, sixteen people have been confirmed dead. Additionally, two vehicles were set ablaze. This violence has understandably escalated public fear and increased calls for immediate government intervention.
Curfew Implementation
To effectively address the unrest, the government imposed a curfew from 6 PM to 6 AM in Bawku and the surrounding areas. This crucial measure took effect on October 28. The primary aim of the curfew is to control the situation and ensure the safety of residents. Notably, recent clashes are linked to the return of a rival chief, which has reignited long-standing conflicts.
The situation in Bawku remains tense. The government’s swift actions underscore the urgent need for peace in the area. By enforcing the curfew and urging community cooperation, officials hope to reduce violence. Ultimately, the Minister’s appeal serves as a reminder of the shared responsibility to work towards a peaceful resolution in the region.
