The University for Development Studies is the 5th public university in Ghana. It was established in the Northern Region of Ghana in the year 1992 as a multi-campus institution.  The university has two main campuses namely Nyankpala Campus and Dungu Campus all situated in Tamale. Furthermore, UDS runs a three-trimester academic calendar. The first and second-trimester focus on on-campus activities, whereas the third-trimester focus on community engagement, practicals and project work.

UDS is an institution that emphasises practical experience, as demonstrated by its annual Third Trimester Practical Programme (TTFPP). First and second-year students participate in this programme, spending two months in the communities. This exposes them to real-life development challenges and builds upon their problem-solving skills. Furthermore, this programme gives the students hands-on experience which sets them apart from students from other universities.

Moreover, third-year students usually go for their internship and attachment programmes during the third trimester. Whereas the final-year students focus on their project work during this period.

Tamale Technical University formerly known as Tamale Polytechnic delivers world-class technical and vocational education. It is Africa’s first University in Northern Ghana that traces its history to a trade school in 1951. Furthermore, it also traces back to a technical institution in 1963.
